The New York Giants take on the Atlanta Falcons in the Wild Card week of the 2012 NFL Playoffs. At 10-6, the Falcons secured a Wild Card berth finishing second in the NFC South behind the New Orleans Saints. They’re coming off a 45-24 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in week 17 action.
The Giants clinched the NFC East championship last week with a 31-14 win over the Dallas Cowboys.
This NFL playoff game will be played on Sunday, January 8, 2012 at 1:00 PM ET in Metlife Stadium (formerly the Meadowlands).
The Giants are on a roll. They are healthy, have Eli Manning at the helm and all the confidence in the world. Here are 8 reasons why the Giants will beat the Falcons in the 2012 NFL Playoffs.
- Eli Manning
Not only is Eli Manning having his best year, he’s been in this position before and succeeded in leading the New York Giants to a Super Bowl in 2007.And don’t forget that Eli is at his best when the chips are down, leading the Giants to 6 4th quarter comebacks during the 2011 NFL regular season. In head-to-head match-up with Falcons QB Matt Ryan, Manning has more completions (359 vs 347) and passing yards (4933 vs 4177). - Peaking at the Right time
The Giants are coming off two impressive victories in must-win games (Week 16 vs NY Jets and Week 17 vs. Dallas Cowboys). The defense is healthy again, wide receiver Victor Cruz has been electrifying. He has 82 catches, 1536 yds, 9 TDs, a crucial 99 TD reception in week 16 against the Jets, and another for 74 yards against the Cowboys in week 17.The Defense is playing the best it has all season and the running game has significantly improved. - They’re Healthy
RB Ahmad Bradshaw, DE Justin Tuck, DE Osi Umenyiora and TE Jake Ballad will suit up. - Giants Defense Is Back
The Giants defense, ravished by injuries to key pass rushers, has been exploited by their opponents all year. If it weren’t for the All Pro play of of defense end Jason Pierre-Paul, the Giants wouldn’t be playing in the 2011 NFL playoffs.Last week, Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora showed they were healthy enough to be major factors in the win over Dallas. - Deja Vu
The Giants have been here before. Back in 2007, the Giants reeled off 4 consecutive victories and won the Super Bowl. 14 Giant players from that championship team remain. - 12th Man
The Giants play at home. You can bet the crowd will be a factor. - Team Chemistry
Those last two wins have the Giants believing they can go all the way. - Tom Coughlin
You can be Coach Coughlin will have his players ready to execute a solid game plan.

The AFC Playoff Picture And Playoff Scenarios
While the NFC playoff picture is not so clear-cut, five of the six AFC playoff spots have been clinched in the NFL this week. But even with most of the AFC playoff picture determined, there are a few AFC playoff scenarios that need to be decided in week 17.
Before we look at those playoff scenarios, let’s recap the AFC action in week 16. The Patriots walloped the Bills 34-3, clinching home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Steelers clinched a playoff spot on Thursday with a 27-3 win over the Panthers. The Ravens beat the Browns 20-10, also clinching a playoff spot. The Steelers and Ravens are both fighting for the same playoff scenario – the AFC North championship and a first-round bye in the playoffs. If both remain tied next week, Pittsburgh wins with the tiebreaker. The Jets lost to the Bears 38-34 but clinched an AFC wildcard spot with a Jaguar loss. The Chiefs clinched the AFC West with a 34-14 win over Broncos.
Going into this week, the Colts and Jaguars were both in the AFC playoff picture, tied for the AFC South division lead. But a Colts win and Jaguars loss gives the Colts the playoff edge. The Colts beat the Raiders 31-26, eliminating them the AFC playoff picture while the Jaguars lost to the Redskins in OT 20-17. A Colts win or Jaguars loss next week gives the Colts the AFC South championship. The Chargers 34-20 loss to the Bengals eliminates them from playoff contention.
Here is what the NFL playoff picture looks like in the AFC going into the last week of the NFL regular season:
- New England Patriots (13-2) have clinched the AFC East and home field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs.
- Pittsburgh Steelers (11-4) have clinched a playoff spot and can clinch the AFC North championship and a first-round bye with a win against the Browns next week in Cleveland.
- Kansas City Chiefs (10-5) have clinched the AFC West.
- Indianapolis Colts (9-6) holds the edge for grabbing the last AFC playoff spot. A Colts win or Jacksonville Jaguars (8-7) loss next week gets them in the playoffs as the AFC South champions.
- Baltimore Ravens (11-4) have clinched a playoff spot and, at best, could end up with a first-round bye and the AFC North championship with a win and Steelers loss next week.
- New York Jets (10-5) have clinched an AFC wildcard spot.
So, who plays who in the first week of the AFC playoffs?
Well, assuming the Steelers beat the Browns next week and win the AFC North championship, the AFC playoff scenario would look like this…
- New England Patriots (AFC Playoff Seed 1) and Pittsburgh Steelers (AFC Playoff Seed 2) earn byes.
- New York Jets (AFC Playoff Seed 6) would play at Kansas City Chiefs (AFC Playoff Seed 3).
- Baltimore Ravens (AFC Playoff Seed 5) would play at Indianapolis Colts (AFC Playoff Seed 4).
What happens if the Steelers lose and the Jets and Ravens win next week?
In this AFC playoff scenario, the Steelers get a wildcard berth and get the 6th seed. The Jets, who hold the tiebreaker against the Steelers, would move up to the 5th seed. The Ravens would get the 2nd seed as the AFC North champion and receive a first round bye.
What is the playoff scenario if the Colts lose and the Jaguars win?
The Jaguars get the 4th seed and the Colts are eliminated.
The NFL playoff picture will be realized next week and all but one AFC playoff scenario will remain.

Roethlisberger Suspended Six Games By Goodell
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, acting as juror, judge and executor, sentenced Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to a six game suspension without pay for violating the NFL personal conduct policy. Roethisberger was also ordered to undergo a behavioral evaluation.
Goodell handed down the decision after a 20 year-old college student accused Roethlisberger of sexually assaulting her in a Georgia nightclub back in March. Ben was suspended even though Georgia prosecutors decided not to charge Roethlisberger for sexual assualt.
Goodell, in a letter sent to the former 2-time Super Bowl champ said, “I recognize that the allegations in Georgia were disputed and that they did not result in criminal charges being filed against you,”
“My decision today is not based on a finding that you violated Georgia law, or on a conclusion that differs from that of the local prosecutor. That said, you are held to a higher standard as an NFL player, and there is nothing about your conduct in Milledgeville that can remotely be described as admirable, responsible, or consistent with either the values of the league or the expectations of our fans.”
As part of the suspension, Roethlisberger must undergo a behavioral evaluation by medical professionals before he can participate or attend any team off-season activities.
Goodell left open the possibility that he could reduce the suspension from 6 games to 4. The Steeler QB could lose close to $3 million in salary if he sits out 6 games.
Many in the NFL expressed shock at the length of the suspension, given he was not charged with a crime. However, this is not the first time Ben Roethlisberger has been accused of improrieties. Back in the summer of 2008, a woman named Andrea McNulty in Nevada accused Roethlisbeger of sexual assault.
Will the suspension of Ben Roethlisberger mean the Steelers won’t make the NFL playoffs in 2010? Not necessarily, especially if the sentence is reduced to 4 games. The Steelers are scheduled with a bye in NFL Week 5, allowing the Steelers to give Roethlisberger all the reps to get ready for NFL Week 6. Here is Steelers schedule for the first six games in 2010.
